Dr. Eva Ombaka

Dr. Eva Ombaka holds a Ph.D. from Aston University, Birmingham researched on the effect of the environment on the resistance of mucoid strains of Pseudomonas. She also holds a Master’s in Public Health and Post-graduate diploma in Health Systems Management. She graduated as a Pharmacist with B.Sc. Pharmacy (Hons) from Aston University, Birmingham, England.


Dr. Ombaka has been in administration for over 20 years in different positions with both local and international agencies. She held the position of head of the Pharmaceutical department as well as head of the Microbiology department at Muhimbili Medical Centre from 1985 to 1988. She also served in higher managerial positions at Keko Pharmaceutical Industries Limited Including Acting General Manager from 1988 to 1992. She later served as a Consultant Pharmacist for Cry for the World Foundation, Nairobi (Sustainable Health Care Foundation), and later moved to Ecumenical Pharmaceutical Network (EPN) from 1997 to 2009 where she served as Technical Advisor and Coordinator of EPN based in Nairobi.


Dr. Ombaka’s academic experiences include being; Senior lecturer, at the Faculty of Pharmacy, St John’s University of Tanzania, Dodoma as her current position. She also served as Assistant Lecturer, Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, and Honorary Lecturer at Muhimbili Medical Centre. She has been a resource person/trainer/facilitator in numerous Courses and Research activities including; Drugs and Therapeutics Committee courses (WHO/MSH), promoting rational use of medicines (WHO/MSH) and drug management and rational use of medicines (CEDMAP/MSH).

 

Dr. Ombaka served in several committees/boards as a member;

  • Member, Tanzania Pharmacy Board (1988 – 1991),

  • Member, Technical Committee for Pharmaceuticals, Tanzania Bureau of Standards (1984 – 1988)

  • Board member, Heath Action International- Africa 1999-2006

  • Board member, Global Board, Health Action International, 2007 to 2016.

  • Member, INRUD (Kenya chapter) from inception to 2010

  • Board Member, Sustainable Health Care Foundation, Kenya (formerly CFW foundation)-to 2011

  • Senior advisor, ReAct-Action against antibiotic resistance.                                                                                                          Dr. Ombaka has participated/carried out consultancy services such as;

  • Civil society lead person in the preparation phase of DFID’s Southern African Regional Programme on Access to Medicines (2010)

  • Lead researcher for the Swiss Centre for International Health (SCIH) of the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute in the project “Health Promotion and System Strengthening (HPSS)” in Dodoma region in Tanzania. Designed, and oversaw the implementation and documentation of a drug use indicator study in the Dodoma region.

  • Lead local researcher for the Swiss Centre for International Health (SCIH) of the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute in the project “Health Promotion and System Strengthening (HPSS)” in Dodoma region in Tanzania. Participated in the design of tools and oversaw the implementation of the study on knowledge, attitudes, and practices in regard to antibiotic use in the Dodoma region.


Dr. Ombaka has published 4 publications in the areas of Pharmaceuticals formulations, drug
use, antimicrobials, and microbiology. She also presented 14 papers at local and international
conferences.
